Dopo il successo de La matematica dei Greci, ospitato al Carcano la scorsa stagione, vengono proposti i due spettacoli – La matematica degli Indiani e La matematica degli Arabi – che completano il progetto curato da Sergio Maifredi e Piergiorgio Odifreddi Il grande racconto della geometria, trilogia prodotta dal Teatro Pubblico Ligure che vede protagonista il matematico e divulgatore Piergiorgio Odifreddi. Con la sua guida sicura, dopo i miti mediterranei di Iliade e Odissea, Maifredi affronta l’altro grande linguaggio universale: la matematica.
“Niente di più naturale – afferma Odifreddi – che iniziare un racconto della matematica partendo proprio dalla geometria. E lo farò, sedendomi sulle spalle non solo di Galileo e di Dante, ma anche di Borges, che nella prefazione della sua Biblioteca inglese dichiarò:
Ho preferito insegnare ai miei studenti non la letteratura inglese, che ignoro, ma l’amore per certi autori. O, meglio ancora, per certe pagine. O, meglio ancora, per certe frasi. E questo basta, mi pare. Uno si innamora di una frase, poi di una pagina, poi dell’autore.
Anch’io ho preferito raccontare non la storia della matematica, che ignoro, ma l’amore per certediscipline. O, meglio ancora, per certe dimostrazioni. O, meglio ancora, per certi risultati. E spero che questo basti. Uno si innamora di un risultato, poi di una dimostrazione, poi di una disciplina.

Non si capisce l’India, e se ne ha solo una visione molto parziale, se ci si ferma alla sua letteratura e alla sua arte, e si ignorano la sua scienza e la sua matematica. Quest’ultima, in particolare, è stata all’avanguardia nel mondo in almeno due occasioni storiche. Verso la seconda metà del primo millennio gli Indiani inventarono in aritmetica lo zero, che era ignoto sia ai Greci che ai Romani. E nella seconda metà del secolo XIV il keralese Madhava scoprì in analisi le serie trigonometriche, che tre secoli più tardi avrebbero fatto la gloria di Newton e Leibniz.
Quanto alla geometria, nei primordi della loro storia gli Indiani la svilupparono anche, se non soprattutto, a fini rituali: cosa non sorprendente, vista la gran varietà di religioni che da sempre allieta o turba, a seconda dei momenti, la vita del paese.
