Holidays@BCM

BCM Adds a Little Lego Levity to Traditional Holiday Displays COVINGTON, KY-- Mammoths and minions and mansions . . .oh my! These eclectic exhibits, all constructed from Legos, join more traditional Christmas displays in Holidays@BCM, Behringer- Crawford Museum's annual celebration. Designed with family fun and safety in mind, Holidays@BCM offers an engaging adventure for kids and a relaxing and affordable break for parents amid the holiday bustle. Each of the museum's four floors are filled with fun and action. While the museum's Holiday Toy Trains aren't running this year due to the pandemic, there are BCM’s animated carnival with its whirling rides and sideshow barkers and the Victorian Christmas village with its ceramic reproductions of structures from Charles Dickens’ novels. Dancing ice dogs and glittering winter scenes from the children’s book, The Holiday Adventures of Wiley Wahoo and Me by Kenton Hills author Diana Grady fill one room at the museum, while another displays a giant Lego Quidditch World Cup stadium straight out of the pages of Harry Potter books. Other Lego displays created by the Ohio-Kentucky- Indiana Lego Users group (OKILUG) include a miniature wooly mammoth display in the prehistoric area, bespectacled yellow minions standing guard in the galleries and an elegant “Brickmore” mansion, designed after the majestic Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. A vintage kitchen display features appliances, accessories and an aluminum Christmas tree that might have been found in a midcentury suburban tenement. Antique toys, singing holiday characters and decorations throughout the museum carry out the theme of holidays through the years. As a special gift to the community, the museum will present “BCM’s Virtual Holiday Countdown” on its Facebook page, with special performances and demonstrations by entertainers, artists and others who have partnered with BCM during the year. The preliminary line-up includes Jake Speed, Katherine Nero, Nicole Zuraitis and Dan Pugach, Cedric Cox, John Lomax and the Hills of Kentucky Dulcimers. A complete schedule and list of participants will be announced soon. Holidays@BCM runs through Sunday, January 3, 2021. Behringer-Crawford is open from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Closed Mondays, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day. Admissions is free. 18th Annual Simply Photography Exhibit Photographers get an opportunity to showcase their signature photographs in this juried show. Photography of all types including traditional, digital, manipulated and photographic mixed-media are allowed. This exhibit will be juried by Jeffrey Allison, the Paul Mellon Collection educator at VMFA and a professional photographer. The exhibit will be in the main gallery. Eternity Concepts by Xexilia O. Shadows Xexilia O. Shadows This exhibit is the illustrative works of Eternity Concepts, the passion project of Xexilia O. Shadows. They depict various moods, emotions, and contain cryptic messages therein. Xexilia began producing and showing art at the VFMA in her youth with traditional media such as drawing and painting; Today, she mainly relies on digital art production due to accessibility. The constant themes explored in her work are love, tragedy, quantum mechanics, the otherworldly, religion, magic, morality, human rights equality, and human nature. She uses art to communicate her thoughts most clearly, as severe dyslexia has made it difficult to explain her views verbally. Instead, a picture is worth more than a thousand words in her world. It can be an entire novel. Long influenced by comics, Xexilia branched in Japanese comics (commonly called manga) in 1996, feeling that the typical format and stories of these comics better worked for the stories she wanted to tell--which were a far cry from American superhero comics or newspaper strips. Today, in addition to being a showcased artist, Xexilia is also a published author in a variety of subjects, namely non-fiction research of paranormal events. Working in the genre of New Adult, her work is beloved by teenagers and adults alike, and often features cautionary tales and examples Xexilia sees as pitfalls of life. Her goal is to always leave the viewer or reader better than before they found her work, to expand their minds and cause them to reconsider themselves, old beliefs, and the world inside and around them. She originally began publishing her works online in 1998 and is considered a legacy or retro webcomic artist.
