Cd-presentatie van Ensemble Odyssee met dansmuziek en instrumentale tussenspelen uit het Versailles van de Zonnenkoning. Met composities van J.B. Lully, J.F. Rebel, J.J. Hotteterre, M. Marais en M. Pignolet de Montéclair. Louis XIV zag zichzelf als de belichaming van Frankrijk en was verzot op dans, dus liet hij zijn hele rijk voor hem dansen. De componist Jean-Baptiste Lully was degene die veel van de Zonnekoning’s dansdromen liet uitkomen en dans tot een wezenlijk deel van de Franse opera’s van die tijd verhief. De koning zelf was een excellente danser en kreeg zo de mogelijkheid om zijn vaardigheden tentoon te stellen tijdens de talrijke balavonden die er in Versailles werden gehouden. Michel Pignolet de Montéclairs Serenade ou Concert zijn een collectie van dansmuziek die waarschijnlijk voor zo een extravagante balavond zijn geschreven. Het bijzondere is dat dezecollectie al de muziek bevat die gedurende één avond werd uitgevoerd, verdeeld in drie delen: airs de fanfares, airs tendres, en airs champêtres. Maar toen Jean-Féry Rebel, één van de violisten van de vingt-quatre violons, zijn Les caractères de la danse componeerde, schiep hij daarmee een nieuw genre: een stuk voor één enkele danseres, die een snelle opeenvolging van kortere delen met ingrijpende karakterwisselingen uitvoerde.Ensemble Odyssee geeft in dit programma een inzicht in deze verschillende dansvormen van het begin van de 18e eeuw. Er wordt niet alleen maar meeslepend gemusiceerd; de dansen zullen voor de ogen van het publiek tot leven komen door het optreden van een danseres.
