Southern Culture on the Skids

Moe's Alley proudly presents KPIG favorites SOUTHERN CULTURE ON THE SKIDS.

Southern Culture On The Skids has been consistently recording and touring around the world since its inception in 1983, when Rick Miller was a grad student at UNC-Chapel Hill. The current lineup (Dave Hartman – drums; Mary Huff – bass and vocals; Rick Miller – guitar and vocals) has been playing together for over 30 years. The band’s musical journey has taken them from all-night NC house parties to late night network talk shows, and from performing at the base of Mt. Fuji in Japan to rockin’ out for the inmates at NC Correctional Facilities. Their music has been featured in movies and TV, and used to sell everything from diamonds to pork sausage, and their legendary live shows are a testament to the therapeutic powers of foot-stomping, butt-shaking rock and roll.

SCOTS’ DIY roots go all the way back to the days of making cassette demos in the dirt floor basement of the original band house. “It was a beat down house we found in the woods, covered in kudzu vines”, Rick recalls. “We hunkered down there and came up with the sound and ideas we’ve been refining and tweaking ever since; a blue plate special of musical genres, all mixed together to give up new flavors and combinations.”

National Black Conference - Chicago

Welcome, everyone to Our 1st annual Black Conference. This conference is long overdue and is the official conference representing the African Diaspora. The main purpose of this conference to: 1. Put in nominations for our official Black Gov't. 2. Begin the process of establishing a Collective Treasury. 3. Explore investment opportunities (real estate). 4. Establish a central care line/website/media outlet which brings us all together, allows us to express any concerns we are having publicly to form a sense of collectivism/unity and support. Keep us all on the same page. These have been understood to be some of our major issues. No doubt, this is only the 1st annual conference. We must take this slowly, it is understood that it will take time to address most of our issues but we must start somewhere. I am very happy to have been blessed with the idea for this conference as well as the knowledge to understand why it is important. Who really knows why we have had to go through the things we've been through as a people? Hey, maybe this is the stuff greatness is made of it reminds me of a quote of mine which says, "we are the ancestors of a great people." Therefore, all we can really do is, first, learn who we are- in reality. And then, put one foot in front of the other and keep it moving. That's it. So here we are. We're here. Let's make the best of it.      Friday  7pm-10pm Networking Reception- alternate location Saturday 7am-9am Breakfast Music performance Speaker 10am-10:50 Music performance 11am-11:30 Speaker 11:30-12 Speaker 12-1 Lunch 1-3 breakout discussions for action planning Music performance 3-3:50 Speaker  Music performance 4-4:30 Speaker 4:30-4:45 Speaker  4:45-5:15 Speaker  5:30-6:30 Dinner- alternate location  Music performance 7pm- 8pm Speaker 10pm until... Holidays@BCM

BCM Adds a Little Lego Levity to Traditional Holiday Displays COVINGTON, KY-- Mammoths and minions and mansions . . .oh my! These eclectic exhibits, all constructed from Legos, join more traditional Christmas displays in Holidays@BCM, Behringer- Crawford Museum's annual celebration. Designed with family fun and safety in mind, Holidays@BCM offers an engaging adventure for kids and a relaxing and affordable break for parents amid the holiday bustle. Each of the museum's four floors are filled with fun and action. While the museum's Holiday Toy Trains aren't running this year due to the pandemic, there are BCM’s animated carnival with its whirling rides and sideshow barkers and the Victorian Christmas village with its ceramic reproductions of structures from Charles Dickens’ novels. Dancing ice dogs and glittering winter scenes from the children’s book, The Holiday Adventures of Wiley Wahoo and Me by Kenton Hills author Diana Grady fill one room at the museum, while another displays a giant Lego Quidditch World Cup stadium straight out of the pages of Harry Potter books. Other Lego displays created by the Ohio-Kentucky- Indiana Lego Users group (OKILUG) include a miniature wooly mammoth display in the prehistoric area, bespectacled yellow minions standing guard in the galleries and an elegant “Brickmore” mansion, designed after the majestic Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. A vintage kitchen display features appliances, accessories and an aluminum Christmas tree that might have been found in a midcentury suburban tenement. Antique toys, singing holiday characters and decorations throughout the museum carry out the theme of holidays through the years. As a special gift to the community, the museum will present “BCM’s Virtual Holiday Countdown” on its Facebook page, with special performances and demonstrations by entertainers, artists and others who have partnered with BCM during the year. The preliminary line-up includes Jake Speed, Katherine Nero, Nicole Zuraitis and Dan Pugach, Cedric Cox, John Lomax and the Hills of Kentucky Dulcimers.
