The Allegany Arts Council and its Saville Gallery are pleased to announce The Mountain Traditions Project: Stories of Appalachian traditions in our rapidly changing world, an exhibition through the eyes and lens of artist Michael O. Snyder. About the Project

Appalachia, a region often synonymous with tradition, is changing faster than any time in recent history and perhaps faster than anywhere else in America. The Mountain Traditions Project tells the stories of individuals carrying forward Appalachian traditions in our rapidly changing world and explores culture as a dynamic force, challenging long-held notions of cultural rigidity in Appalachia. The project will also include a series of documentary films, as well as a podcast series.

The project was created by photographer and filmmaker Michael O. Snyder, who lead a team of artists and folklorists from the Allegheny Highlands region of Western Maryland.  The team includes:  Sidney Beeman, Alex Beeman, and Arthur Nazaryan (filmmakers), Leah Scarpelli (audio journalist), and Dr. Kara Rogers Thomas (folklorist and content advisor).

The project was funded with generous support from The Community Trust Foundation, and was created in partnership with The Frostburg State University Foundation, The Appalachian IndependentMountain City Traditional Arts, West Virginia Public Radio, The Maryland Traditions Program, The Maryland State Arts Council, Frostburg State University, and Interdependent Pictures.

The exhibition runs from January 9-30, 2021. A Public Opening will take place Saturday, January 9, 2021, from 6-8PM, and is free and open tot he public.
