Goin' to Chicago chronicles one of the most momentous yet least heralded sagas of American history - the great migration of African-Americans from the rural South to the cities of the North and West. The story of a group of African-Americans who take a homecoming trip from Chicago to Greenville, MS serves as a vehicle to trace the story of the mass migration of African-Americans from the rural south to Chicago between 1915 and 1960. The migration story focuses on the racism, sharecropping, and unemployment that prompted migration from the south, and tells how African-Americans were able to build new lives in Chicago. It also shows the struggles of living in Chicago, including the racist restrictive-housing covenants, and the overcrowded housing projects; also includes the unemployment problem in Chicago after the closing of the stockyards and steel mills in the latter part of the 20th century.
This film screening will immediately follow the Sharing The Crop Migration Cipher: a talking circle curated by Rebuild Foundation 2019 Dance Fellow, Ayesha Jaco. Please come to both events to ensure your seat!

All film screenings are free. RSVPs through Eventbrite open approximately two weeks before a screening. While seats are not guaranteed, RSVPing through Eventbrite will grant primary access to the screening room when doors open 30 minutes before a screening.
If Eventbrite lists the screening as “sold out,” you can join the online waitlist. If online ticketholders cancel their order, you will be given the option to be assigned an RSVP. (You must claim the RSVP within 24 hours to be moved from the waitlist.)
Doors open 30 minutes before the screening starts. Each person in your party must arrive to the screening early to take advantage of their RSVP. Seats cannot be saved.
Any walk up attendees who do not have an RSVP will be placed on an onsite waitlist. If seats remain at five minutes before showtime, waitlisted attendees will be let in, in the order they arrived. The onsite waitlist is first-come, first-serve.
