Introduction to Hanafi Fiqh
Essential to daily worship is understanding the most fundamental of individual obligations (fardh 'ayn) and the regulations involved. Mīzān Avenue offers 10-week courses of devotional law (fiqh) throughout the year. In late 2018, we had Ustadh Abdulrahman cover purification and prayer of the Shafi'i school. Starting February 2019, Shaykh Wesam will be covering the same topics from the Hanafi school.
The Hanafi School is one of the four major schools of Sunni Islamic legal reasoning and repositories of positive law. It was built upon the teachings of Imam Abu Hanifa (d. 767), a scholar from Kufa, in present-day Iraq.
Officially adopted by the Ottoman Turks in the 16th century and codified in the Mejelle, Hanafi jurisprudence remains the most influential school in the world today and is used in Jordan, Lebanon, Pakistan, Syria, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates. With respect to family and personal law issues, Hanafi fiqh predominates in Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Iraq, Pakistan, Syria, and, for significant minority populations, in Iran and Malaysia.
This 10-week introductory level course will cover the classic primer in Hanafi text Nur al-Idah (Light of clarification) a classical text within the Sunni-Hanafi school of thought, which Sh Wesam translated himself. The text will be available for sale at Mizan Avenue.
The course is free of charge and will be held every week on Tuesday nights, commencing on Tuesday 12 February for ten consecutive weeks. Registration is essential.
