Monzo is a bank that lives on your phone. For many, going cashless is convenient, and can feel safer and easier than using physical money. At the same time, there's been lots of demand for cash deposits from our community: we just passed the £1 million mark. Is cash really disappearing? And what would we be losing?
Central bankers warn that total dependency on big banks and card companies increases the risk of financial instability. Experts suggest that a card company monopoly on the exchange of money could allow for fee hikes that will be passed on to consumers. Many people, for lots of reasons, still need to use cash, and would be vulnerable to harm in a cash-free world.
Come along to the latest instalment of our Monzo Debates series to hear the case for both sides! Speakers will include Natalie Ceeney from Innovate Finance, David Clarke from Positive Money, Helen Prowse from Square and Simon Vans-Colina from Monzo. We’ll be opening up the floor for audience participation, so bring your best opinions — but get ready to change your mind.
