Marathon Club is a free program through the Langston Hughes PTO that runs on Monday mornings (7:55am-8:35am) and on Wednesday afternoons after school (2:20-3:00pm). The program gives children a chance to participate in a non-competitive outdoor activity and encourages exercise. The kids walk or run a mile loop under the supervision of volunteers at DeVictor Park with the goal of accumulating 26.2 miles equivalent to a marathon and earning their finisher shirt. Many children continue to run after they complete their first marathon and are recognized for each additional marathon.

Terracotta: Past, Present and Future
This conference is designed to provide a historical context for the use of terracotta and faïence in architectural structures and the latest information on the restoration and refurbishment of buildings bearing these materials, as well as promote the use of terracotta and faïence in contemporary new-build projects. The conference is suitable for all those involved in conservation, refurbishment and new-build architectural activities - whether in local government, architectural practice, project management or training and education. Leading practitioners in the field of architectural conservation; the manufacturers of terracotta and faïence; and designers of new-build construction featuring these materials will be among the panel of speakers.
The conference will include a tour of some of the most important buildings in central Manchester as well as a visit to a major manufacturer of both conservation and new-build architectural terracotta and faïence. Outline agenda:
DAY ONE will include presentations covering the history of architectural terracotta and faïence, the range of terracotta buildings, manufacturers, and process from design to build. This will be followed by an introduction to conservation: causes of degradation, then questions and discussion. In the afternoon there will be a visit to Darwen Terracotta and Faience including coach travel to the factory where handcrafted, traditional methods are combined with modern kiln-firing technology. Lunch is provided en-route.
DAY TWO focuses on conservation in the present: cleaning of terracotta and faience; conservation practice; case studies of conservation projects. In the afternoon there will be a walking tour of architectural ceramic sites in central Manchester followed by talks on manufacture, architectural design, and new-build terracotta projects with an overview of the current use of terracotta in new buildings and where this is made; an architect's view of using terracotta in new buildings; further views and discussion of the use in new buildings. 5pm close.
