Alex Ross geht einer grundlegenden Ambivalenz im Vermächtnis Richard Wagners auf die Spur: Seiner berüchtigten Rolle als Vordenker und Aushängeschild nationalistischer, rassistischer und patriarchaler Werte steht sein nachhaltiger Einfluss auf Autorinnen und Autoren sowie Intellektuelle aus marginalisierten Gruppen gegenüber. Ross verfolgt die Ausbreitung des wagnerianischen Antisemitismus im späten 19. Jahrhundert parallel zu den gegenläufigen Tendenzen wagnerianischer Dekadenz und Erotik – so gelingt es ihm, die verschiedenen Stränge im komplexen Nachwirken des Komponisten mit Blick auf die in die Subalternität gezwungenen Gruppen zu verbinden und ein Portrait des Wagnerismus zu zeichnen, das mehr ist als die Summe seiner Teile.
