A new way to share knowledge, insight and understanding in a challenging insurance investment environment
2019 will be a year of change. On the macro side, there is clearly Brexit to contend with, but also wider geopolitical and unilateral dynamics at play globally that are upending plans. For now, everyone is focused on the end of March, but there is plenty to consider and think about past that. Currency volatility will become a key focus most likely as investors begin to think about the Pound post Brexit and as trade tensions spill over into currency sentiment and behaviour. On the asset front, January will see the introduction of STS, which may reopen securitisation channels. Meanwhile, insurers have embraced a swathe of new assets, and are fast learning about how to originate, invest and manage these within the strictures of Solvency II. The portfolio will continue to evolve, but in the face of growing risks and volatility, is also likely to see an increased focus on downside management and carefully creating asymmetric risk-return profiles. And then, there is the question mark over regulation, as the UK diverges from Europe and as Solvency II undergoes its first reviews.
