L’algoritmo è un’invenzione araba. Le funzioni stesse, benché già usate in pratica dagli Egizi, furono isolate in teoria soltanto nel IX secolo dagli Arabi. In particolare, la prima tavola di tangenti è dovuta a al-Khwarizmi, dal cui nome deriva il termine «algoritmo». E la prima tavola di cotangenti è dovuta a al-Mervazi, che veniva chiamato «il calcolatore». In quello stesso secolo al-Battani definì anche gli inversi di seno e coseno, chiamati rispettivamente cosecante e secante, e ne compilò le prime tavole. Fu così completata la lista delle sei funzioni trigonometriche, definite come i possibili rapporti fra i lati di un triangolo rettangolo (ce ne sono sei, perché ognuno dei tre lati può essere messo in rapporto con gli altri due).
