A cross-cultural, cross-disciplinary dialogue

This event has been RESCHEDULED for a date to be announced in 2019 As there has been considerable interest in this symposium you are advised to register now. All those who have registered their interest in advance will be the first to be advised when a new date has been decided. REGISTER YOUR INTEREST NOW Sovereignty is a foundational concept for the globally dominant systems of jurisprudence, international relations and governance. But this Western thinking about sovereignty is stuck in the European and colonial past, making it hard to deal with a whole range of urgent global and local challenges from climate change, to ecosystem protection and renewal, to honouring the wisdom of indigenous cultures. Sovereignty’s expression in the theory of the nation state since the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648 and the sovereignty of the individual according to some readings of the US Constitution of 1787 have become inimical to the viability of our own species and many others as well. A new conception of sovereignty vested in the Earth and asserting the preeminence of respect for the matrix of life, the integrity of the biosphere, and the inalienability of our global commons has become a necessity. The redefinition of Earth sovereignty as prior to and more fundamental than human agency would provide a basis on which to reframe all our doctrines of authority, justice and responsible governance. In this respect Australia’s indigenous knowledge systems and traditions of Caring for Country have much to teach the hegemonic cultures of crisis prone techno-industrial growth societies. This symposium will invite a dialogue between four principal praxis streams within a context of indigenous understandings of human participation in and responsibility for the natural order. The four praxis streams will be: • Law, Governance and Politics • Earth System Science • Planetary Health • Society and Culture Particpation in the symposium will be by invitation following a call for expressions of interest. Participants may offer to present a paper, convene a panel, facilitate a roundtable or dialogue circle, or simply contribute to the deliberations.

BCM Adds a Little Lego Levity to Traditional Holiday Displays COVINGTON, KY-- Mammoths and minions and mansions . . .oh my! These eclectic exhibits, all constructed from Legos, join more traditional Christmas displays in Holidays@BCM, Behringer- Crawford Museum's annual celebration. Designed with family fun and safety in mind, Holidays@BCM offers an engaging adventure for kids and a relaxing and affordable break for parents amid the holiday bustle. Each of the museum's four floors are filled with fun and action. While the museum's Holiday Toy Trains aren't running this year due to the pandemic, there are BCM’s animated carnival with its whirling rides and sideshow barkers and the Victorian Christmas village with its ceramic reproductions of structures from Charles Dickens’ novels. Dancing ice dogs and glittering winter scenes from the children’s book, The Holiday Adventures of Wiley Wahoo and Me by Kenton Hills author Diana Grady fill one room at the museum, while another displays a giant Lego Quidditch World Cup stadium straight out of the pages of Harry Potter books. Other Lego displays created by the Ohio-Kentucky- Indiana Lego Users group (OKILUG) include a miniature wooly mammoth display in the prehistoric area, bespectacled yellow minions standing guard in the galleries and an elegant “Brickmore” mansion, designed after the majestic Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. A vintage kitchen display features appliances, accessories and an aluminum Christmas tree that might have been found in a midcentury suburban tenement. Antique toys, singing holiday characters and decorations throughout the museum carry out the theme of holidays through the years. As a special gift to the community, the museum will present “BCM’s Virtual Holiday Countdown” on its Facebook page, with special performances and demonstrations by entertainers, artists and others who have partnered with BCM during the year. The preliminary line-up includes Jake Speed, Katherine Nero, Nicole Zuraitis and Dan Pugach, Cedric Cox, John Lomax and the Hills of Kentucky Dulcimers. A complete schedule and list of participants will be announced soon. Holidays@BCM runs through Sunday, January 3, 2021. Behringer-Crawford is open from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Closed Mondays, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day. Check www.bcmuseum.org for special holiday hours. Admission is free for BCM members. Cost for non-members is $9 adult, $8 senior, $5 children age 3-12, free for children under 3.
